The novel practice of microdosing mushrooms and other psychedelics has prompted a heated debate in the psychiatric field concerning their efficacy in treating depression. Microdoses of psychedelics may alleviate depression without the confusing highs of higher dosages, potentially altering depression treatment.

Clinical psychologist Lena Hart, specializing in integrative treatment, presents her thoughts from her clients' experiences and studies. "Microdosing can initiate a subtle yet profound shift in how patients perceive their environment and interact with their thoughts," Hart says. Even in low dosages, psychedelics appear to boost neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to establish new neural connections, which sadness often inhibits.

Dr. Hart outlines how microdosing psilocybin or LSD may reduce the brain's default mode network (DMN) hyperactivity, which is linked to depression's reflective thinking. "There's a decoupling effect," adds, "where patients report a significant reduction in depressive symptoms as they become less fixated on past traumas and negative thought loops."

CBT psychologist Dr. Jacob Reynolds offers a different perspective. He advises against treating microdosing alone. "While initial reports are promising, we must consider the placebo effect, which can be particularly strong in treatments involving mood and perception," Reynolds says. He stresses the necessity for large clinical trials to assess microdosing's efficacy and safety for depression, especially compared to antidepressants.

These hopeful results aside, Dr. Reynolds notes a significant issue: the absence of consistency in psychedelic dose and potency, which makes assessing their therapeutic potential difficult. "Without uniformity in what 'microdosing' entails, it's difficult to predict or achieve consistent results," he says.

Doctor Elaine Morse, a psychedelic-assisted therapy expert, outlines the therapeutic setting for microdose depression treatment. "The environment can significantly affect microdosing. She advises using microdosing with psychotherapy to improve outcomes. Dr. Morse has found that microdosing combined with mindfulness and talk therapy helps patients balance their emotions and understand their thoughts and behaviors.

This conversation also prioritizes law and ethics. Dr. Hart notes that most psychedelics are Schedule I substances in the US, which limits clinical study and patient access despite decriminalization initiatives. "The legal landscape needs to evolve to not only expand research opportunities but also to ensure that patients receive safe and regulated access to these potentially life-changing substances," he says.

Psychologists also worry about the social effects of mainstreaming psychedelics in mental health care. Dr. Reynolds fears misuse and patient stigma. "We need to navigate these treatments with an awareness of the historical and cultural baggage they carry," he adds.

The interviewees agree that microdosing psychedelics is a promising new depression treatment, but it should be done cautiously. To responsibly and effectively use psychedelics, research, legal frameworks, and integrated treatment protocols are needed.
